Blue Eye Samurai Review: A Stylish, Brutal Revenge Tale

9/10 — Blue Eye Samurai (2023)
Pros
- Stunning animation
- Superb action
- Complex heroine
Cons
- Graphic violence
In Edo-period Japan, Mizu, a mixed-race swordswoman, sets out to kill the four white men who might be her father. Maya Erskine voices Mizu in the eight-episode series.
What works
The animation is stunning, and the action scenes are superbly choreographed. Mizu is a complex heroine, and the series explores identity, prejudice and revenge with intelligence.
Where it falters
The violence is graphic, and the pacing can lurch between action and exposition.
Verdict
Gorgeous, gripping and a very strong debut.
