BoJack Horseman Review: A Funny, Devastating Animated Drama

9/10 — BoJack Horseman (2014)
Pros
- Sharp writing
- Will Arnett's voice work
- Brave emotional depth
Cons
- Slow start
- Bleak
BoJack, a washed-up sitcom star who happens to be a horse, tries to relaunch his career in a Hollywood populated by humans and talking animals. The series ran for six seasons.
What works
The jokes and visual puns are dense, and the writing is willing to tackle serious themes like addiction, grief and self-destruction. Will Arnett’s voice performance is superb, and episodes like ‘Fish Out of Water’ and ‘Free Churro’ are outstanding.
Where it falters
The first half of season one is uneven, and the show’s bleakness can be heavy.
Verdict
A brilliant, sad and surprisingly profound show.
