Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey Review: A Modern Tour of the Universe

Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey (2014)

9/10 — Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey (2014)

Pros

  • Dazzling visuals
  • Accessible science
  • Inspiring tone

Cons

  • Stiff animated segments

A follow-up to Carl Sagan’s Cosmos, this thirteen-part series is hosted by astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson. He explores the universe and the history of scientific discovery, using the ‘Ship of the Imagination’.

What works

The CGI visuals make cosmic concepts vivid, and Tyson’s enthusiasm is infectious. The animated segments telling stories of historic scientists are engaging, and the show doesn’t shy away from topics like evolution and climate change.

Where it falters

Some of the animation is a little stilted, and Tyson’s style can be lecture-like.

Verdict

A beautiful, inspiring series that makes you feel small and curious.
