Firefly Review: Gone Too Soon

Firefly (2002)

9/10 — Firefly (2002)

Pros

  • Terrific cast chemistry
  • Witty dialogue
  • Fresh space Western setting

Cons

  • Cancelled before its time
  • Incomplete story

Captain Malcolm Reynolds, played by Nathan Fillion, and his crew of misfits scrape out a living on the fringes of space after losing a war against a powerful Alliance. It was cancelled after one season by Fox.

What works

The cast, including Gina Torres, Alan Tudyk and Adam Baldwin, has excellent chemistry, and the dialogue is witty and distinctive. The Western-meets-sci-fi mix feels fresh, and the episodes show hints of an ambitious story.

Where it falters

The series ends unfinished, and Fox aired it out of order, hurting the early episodes. The mystery of River is left to the film Serenity.

Verdict

Short but brilliant. A cult classic that deserved more.
