Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood Review: A Near-Perfect Anime Adventure

9.5/10 — Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (2009)
Pros
- Tight, satisfying plotting
- Memorable characters
- Superb action
Cons
- Rushed early episodes
- Large cast
After a failed alchemical ritual to resurrect their mother, Edward Elric loses his arm and leg and his brother Alphonse’s soul is bound to a suit of armour. They search for the Philosopher’s Stone to restore their bodies.
What works
The story is tightly plotted over 64 episodes, with villains and heroes who feel fully developed, and the themes of sacrifice and equivalent exchange are well explored. The action and animation are superb, and it has the humour and heart to match.
Where it falters
The opening episodes rush through events covered in the earlier 2003 anime, and the large cast can be overwhelming.
Verdict
An essential anime that deserves its place at the top of fans’ lists.
