Game of Thrones Review: Epic Fantasy Gone Mainstream

8.5/10 — Game of Thrones (2011)
Pros
- Intricate political storytelling
- Superb ensemble
- Epic production values
Cons
- Rushed final seasons
- Gratuitous content
Noble houses vie for the Iron Throne of Westeros while an ancient threat gathers in the north and an exiled princess raises an army across the sea. It ran for eight seasons.
What works
The first four seasons are superb, with intricate political plotting, shocking twists and extraordinary performances from Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey and Charles Dance. The production values, such as the Battle of the Blackwater, set a new bar for TV fantasy.
Where it falters
As the show outran the books, the writing weakened, and the rushed final season is a notable disappointment. The show’s nudity and violence can also feel gratuitous.
Verdict
Utterly gripping at its peak, but the ending is a letdown.
