It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia Review: Terrible People, Great Comedy

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia (2005)

8.5/10 — It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia (2005)

Pros

  • Fearless performances
  • Inventive episodes
  • Dark, fresh humour

Cons

  • Crude humour
  • Less consistent in later seasons

The Gang, who run Paddy’s Pub in Philadelphia, scheme, bicker and behave abominably in pursuit of petty goals. It has become the longest-running live-action American sitcom.

What works

The cast, including Charlie Day, Glenn Howerton and Danny DeVito, is fearless, and the show pushes into extremes with a gleeful lack of redemption. Episodes like ‘The Nightman Cometh’ and ‘Charlie Work’ are classics.

Where it falters

The humour can be crude and offensive, and later seasons are less consistent.

Verdict

Gloriously twisted comedy that never lets its characters learn.
