8.5/10 — Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (2014)
Pros
- Well-researched main stories
- Sharp comedy
- Real-world impact
Cons
- US-centric
- Can feel preachy
Each week John Oliver recaps the news briefly before delivering a long main story on a subject such as prisons, lotteries or the Supreme Court. The show has shaped real-world debate.
What works
The research is thorough, and the jokes make complex subjects accessible, with Oliver’s anger and wit well matched. The main stories are well constructed and often prompt reaction.
Where it falters
The show’s US focus may be less relevant to some, and its style can be lecture-like.
Verdict
Smart, funny and valuable viewing.
