Planet Earth II Review: Nature Filmmaking at Its Peak

9.5/10 — Planet Earth II (2016)
Pros
- Unbelievable camera work
- Gripping sequences
- Attenborough's narration
Cons
- Dramatised, scored approach
David Attenborough returns to narrate six episodes covering islands, mountains, jungles, deserts, grasslands and cities. Filmed with new lightweight cameras and drones, it gets closer to wildlife than ever before.
What works
The photography is astonishing, and the chase of a baby marine iguana by racer snakes is one of the most thrilling sequences ever filmed, with Hans Zimmer’s score driving it. The behaviour on show, from sloths swimming to Himalayan snow leopards, is endlessly fascinating, and Attenborough’s narration is as warm as ever.
Where it falters
The editorial approach favours drama over science, and some of the dramatic music makes animals feel like movie characters.
Verdict
A feast for the eyes and a must-see on the biggest screen possible.
