Rick and Morty Review: Cosmic Chaos and Existential Dread

8.5/10 — Rick and Morty (2013)
Pros
- Inventive sci-fi concepts
- Sharp writing
- Emotional undercurrent
Cons
- Uneven later seasons
- Wearing cynicism
Genius, alcoholic scientist Rick Sanchez drags his anxious grandson Morty on interdimensional adventures, to the despair of Morty’s family. Created by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon, it began as a parody of Back to the Future.
What works
The ideas are inventive, from Pickle Rick to the Citadel of Ricks, and the show balances absurd sci-fi with real emotional stakes. Season-long arcs and sharp episodes like ‘Pickle Rick’ and ‘Total Rickall’ show off the creators’ skill.
Where it falters
Later seasons have been uneven, and some of its fanbase is notorious. The show’s cynicism can wear thin.
Verdict
Smart, anarchic and often brilliant, though inconsistent over time.
