Seinfeld Review: The Show About Nothing

9/10 — Seinfeld (1989)
Pros
- Brilliantly interlocking plots
- Great ensemble
- Endlessly quotable
Cons
- Some dated humour
- Weak finale
Comedian Jerry Seinfeld plays a version of himself, navigating life in Manhattan with his friends George, Elaine and Kramer. The show ran for nine seasons and became a cultural phenomenon.
What works
The writing is sharp, with interlocking plots that come together beautifully, and the characters are selfish and hilarious. Michael Richards, Jason Alexander and Julia Louis-Dreyfus are brilliant, and episodes like ‘The Soup Nazi’ and ‘The Contest’ are comedy classics.
Where it falters
Some of its jokes and social attitudes have dated, and the final episode was a disappointment to many viewers.
Verdict
Smart, observational and endlessly quotable.
