South Park Review: Crude, Fearless Satire
8.5/10 — South Park (1997)
Pros
- Topical, fearless satire
- Classic episodes
- Rapid production
Cons
- Offensive humour
- Variable quality
Four boys, Stan, Kyle, Cartman and Kenny, live in the small town of South Park, Colorado, where they encounter absurd events that often parody current affairs. It has run for more than two decades.
What works
The show’s quick turnaround allows it to react to events within days, and its satire skewers all sides. Episodes like ‘Scott Tenorman Must Die’ and ‘Make Love, Not Warcraft’ are classics.
Where it falters
The humour is deliberately offensive, and the quality has varied over the years.
Verdict
Provocative and often brilliant, though not for everyone.
