The Office Review: Cringe Comedy in Scranton

The Office (2005)

8.5/10 — The Office (2005)

Pros

  • Terrific ensemble
  • Brilliant Jim and Pam romance
  • Cringe humour with heart

Cons

  • Later seasons decline
  • Some dated jokes

Presented as a mockumentary, the series follows the staff of a paper company’s Scranton branch and their well-meaning but clueless manager, Michael Scott. It was adapted by Greg Daniels from the British original.

What works

The ensemble is superb, with John Krasinski’s Jim, Jenna Fischer’s Pam and Rainn Wilson’s Dwight standing out. The slow-burn romance between Jim and Pam is a highlight, and the show mixes cringe humour with real heart.

Where it falters

After Carell left, the quality dipped noticeably, and some of the jokes haven’t aged well.

Verdict

Warm, funny and endlessly rewatchable in its first five seasons.
