The Simpsons Review: The Longest-Running Sitcom Ever
9/10 — The Simpsons (1989)
Pros
- Brilliant classic-era writing
- Huge cast of memorable characters
- Cultural influence
Cons
- Decline in later seasons
Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie live in the town of Springfield in a satirical, endlessly quotable cartoon. It premiered as a series in 1989 and has run for dozens of seasons.
What works
The golden age, from around seasons three to eight, is packed with brilliant jokes, clever references and surprising heart. The supporting cast of Springfield residents is huge and memorable.
Where it falters
The quality has declined significantly in recent years, and the show’s longevity has diluted its legacy.
Verdict
Its classic seasons are among TV’s finest.
