The Vietnam War Review: Ken Burns and Lynn Novick's Epic

9/10 — The Vietnam War (2017)
Pros
- Many perspectives, including Vietnamese voices
- Powerful interviews and footage
- Excellent period soundtrack
Cons
- Very long
- Some historians dispute its framing
Directors Ken Burns and Lynn Novick spent ten years on this PBS series, combining archive footage, period music and interviews with Americans and Vietnamese on both sides. It covers the war from the French colonial period through to its aftermath.
What works
The breadth of voices is exceptional, and the series is moving and humane, letting soldiers, protesters and civilians speak for themselves. The soundtrack of period songs is excellent, and the narration by Peter Coyote is measured.
Where it falters
At eighteen hours it’s a big commitment, and some historians have criticised its view of American responsibility as too even-handed.
Verdict
A deep, thoughtful series that deserves your time.
