Ridley Scott is trading the title of ‘filmmaker’ for ‘influencer,’ asserting that his impact on cinema extends far beyond the frame. The 88-year-old director is using his platform to reflect on his legacy and the wild evolution of storytelling, offering sharp, unfiltered commentary on what modern audiences consume and what movies should be.
In a recent feature, Scott embraced the idea that his work is less about technical craft and more about sparking cultural conversations. He suggested that those who are ahead of the game—those who inspire—are the true influencers. “I’ve been ahead of the game frequently, and if you’re ahead of the game, you’re an influencer. So I’m not a filmmaker, I’m an influencer,” he stated, capturing the essence of his shifting perspective on his career.
This shift came with a dose of irreverence. When asked about the current landscape of cinema, Scott offered a witty take on the prevailing trends. He pointed to the kinds of stories currently being greenlit, ranging from tales of a murdered girl in the woods and FBI agents to superhero narratives, exclaiming, “F–k me! There have to be other stories to tell.”

When referencing Quentin Tarantino’s high praise for Scott’s film Black Hawk Down as the greatest film of the 21st century, Scott offered a surprising rebuttal. He wondered what Tarantino was watching, before simply dismissing the notion, stating plainly, “No!”
Looking toward his next creative endeavors, Scott revealed a hunger to explore genres he has never tackled before. He is reportedly planning to delve into the Western genre, having already cast Hugh Jackman for his adaptation of Treasure Island. Furthermore, he expressed ambitions to create a musical and a spectacular film centered on the African elephant.
