Sam Raimi produces Desperation for Final Destination action directors

The cinematic universe is buzzing with news from the horror genre, as some of Hollywood’s most sought-after directors have lined up an ambitious new project. Adam B. Stein and Zach Lipovsky, the creative forces behind the massive franchise Final Destination: Bloodlines, have been tapped to direct a feature adaptation of Stephen King’s 1996 novel, Desperation. Adding further intrigue to this high-profile collaboration is producer Sam Raimi, who is slated to help steer this adaptation. Searchlight Pictures is backing the project, with Stephen King himself reportedly involved in the process.

Desperation has a rich foundation for cinematic storytelling. The story plunges viewers into a desolate stretch of Highway 50 in Nevada, where a group of strangers are suddenly rounded up by the deputy of a nearly abandoned mining town named Desperation. Their desperate journey quickly escalates when they discover that the seemingly deranged lawman is possessed by an ancient supernatural entity known as Tak, forcing them into a fight for survival against an encroaching evil before it consumes the isolated desert community.

This adaptation marks the first time this gripping narrative will be brought to the big screen as a feature film, following its previous appearance as a television movie in 2006. The novel Desperation was released alongside King’s companion book, The Regulators, both of which explore alternate realities populated by familiar characters.

Stein and Lipovsky have rapidly established themselves as formidable forces in genre filmmaking. Following critical acclaim for their 2018 sci-fi thriller Freaks, they delivered a successful revitalization of the horror franchise with Final Destination: Bloodlines. Their momentum has propelled them into an enviable position, securing major studio assignments and further cementing their status as in-demand directors.

Their growing résumé is packed with genre gems. They are currently working on Gremlins 3 alongside Chris Columbus and Steven Spielberg, have directed the Sony Pictures animated film Venom, and hold first-look deals for major properties including The Earthling and a Metal Gear Solid adaptation. This string of successful projects highlights their mastery over genre storytelling.

Bringing Sam Raimi into this equation adds an extra layer of cinematic history to the project. The connection between King and Raimi is deep, rooted in horror history. Long before The Evil Dead became a cult classic, Stephen King championed Sam Raimi’s early, low-budget film work, recognizing his talent.
