A classic Western is hitting the big screen, bringing a unique blend of frontier grit and intellectual curiosity to theaters. The new film, Last Train to Fortune, stars Oscar-winning actor Malcolm McDowell as Cecil Peachtree, a schoolteacher who finds himself swept into a wild new world.
The story dives into the dramatic journey of Cecil, who is seeking a fresh start by traveling to Fortune for a new job. But fate intervenes when he misses his train and crosses paths with the notorious outlaw Jedidiah Dooley, played by James Paxton. What begins as an unlikely encounter quickly escalates into a high-stakes partnership.
In a savvy deal that changes the course of their adventure, Dooley agrees to escort Cecil to Fortune in exchange for the teacher’s waiting stipend. This arrangement sets the stage for a whirlwind journey filled with classic Western chaos—gunfights, desperate horse chases, jailbreaks, and the inevitable trouble that follows in dusty frontier towns.
Directed by Adam Rifkin and penned by Michele Rifkin, the film uses its rugged Western setting not just for action, but as a backdrop to explore deeper themes. Last Train to Fortune thoughtfully examines the profound value of literacy, the importance of education, and the enduring power of knowledge in an unpredictable world.
The ensemble cast brings depth and unforgettable chemistry to the narrative. Malcolm McDowell masterfully embodies Cecil Peachtree, the educated man grappling with the unfamiliar. He is joined by James Paxton as the rugged outlaw Dooley, whose reluctant partnership with Cecil defines their perilous trek. The cast is further bolstered by Mary Steenburgen as Miss Maybelle, and supporting roles include Bernadette Peters as Miss Lily and Laura Marano as Amanda.
The supporting characters are equally compelling, including M.C. Gainey as Snake, Lee Arenberg as the Sheriff, and Marshall Bell as the Station Master, painting a vibrant picture of frontier life.
The project has a rich history, stemming from early development discussions with Lindsay Anderson and Bill Paxton. After those creative forces moved on, James Paxton stepped into the role of Dooley, carrying forward a legacy from his own father.
Last Train to Fortune premiered at the Ojai Film Festival in November 2025. Now available for a limited theatrical release, the film will open in New York on September 18, 2026, followed by Dallas on September 23 and Los Angeles on September 25.
