Smile Star Sosie Bacon joins MGM+ horror series The Black Tapes
Get ready to dive deep into the shadows, because the world of horror is about to get a fascinating twist. Smile, Family Movie star Sosie Bacon is joining the cast of MGM+’s new series, The Black Tapes, bringing a fresh dynamic to a story steeped in the unexplained and the sinister.
Bacon steps into the role of Alex Regan, a methodical physicist whose quest to debunk paranormal phenomena will form the backbone of the series. It’s a perfect pairing for a genre that thrives on both intellectual curiosity and sheer terror. This new venture promises to blend classic cinematic storytelling with a compelling investigation into the occult world lurking just beneath the surface of reality.
The Black Tapes centers on the intense collaboration between Dr. Richard Strand, played by the already magnetic Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, and Alex Regan. Strand, a brilliant psychiatrist with a mysterious past, teams up with Regan to tackle hauntings, disappearances, and sinister legends known as the infamous black tapes. But as they unravel the secrets of these events, they are on the verge of uncovering a hidden occult world and confronting a centuries-old apocalyptic conspiracy.
This ambitious eight-episode series is built upon the foundation of a successful 2015 horror podcast of the same name, created by Terry Miles and Paul Bae. The showrunners, including John Rogers of Leverage, collaborated with Miles and Bae on the writing duties, ensuring a story that is both chilling and deeply engaging.
The production is set to begin in Vancouver in January 2027, with a global release scheduled for MGM+. This series will reach audiences across the US, UK, Ireland, Germany, Italy, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Latin America.
MGM+ global head Michael Wright expressed enthusiasm for the project, noting that the series crafts a compelling narrative around cultural fascination with the unexplained while delivering the cinematic storytelling MGM+ audiences expect. He highlighted the excitement surrounding Nikolaj’s presence and the creative vision behind the project.
Meanwhile, Sosie Bacon is already making waves across the screen. She recently played a scientist in the horror-comedy Cold Storage earlier this year, and she is set to star in the upcoming Family Movie, which is slated for release on April 23, 2027, featuring her real-life family.
