Sony Adapts The Drifter Game for Film
Sony Pictures is gearing up for a potentially gritty, cinematic adventure, announcing plans to adapt the pixel art point-and-click masterpiece The Drifter into a live-action feature film.
The project is spearheaded by the creative powerhouses of Story Kitchen, bringing together a unique blend of indie game design and Hollywood ambition. Dmitri M. Johnson and Michael Lawrence Goldberg will serve as producers, while Timothy I. Stevenson and Elena Sandoval will executive produce the endeavor, guiding the vision from concept to screen.
The source material itself is a pulpy adventure game developed by the Australian independent studio Powerhoof. The game plunges players into the world of a nomadic drifter who witnesses a brutal murder before being drowned by a group of high-tech soldiers. But the story doesn’t end there; the drifter awakens, forced into a desperate fight for survival while unraveling a dark conspiracy involving shadowy corporations and a relentless madman’s obsession.
This dark narrative already garnered significant recognition, having won the Game of the Year award at the 2025 Australian Game Developer Awards. With the foundation laid, the pitch has already caught the attention of top writers and directors eager to bring the world of The Drifter to life on screen.
Story Kitchen is clearly cultivating a robust pipeline of game-to-screen adaptations. Their slate already includes film takes on titles like Streets of Rage and Just Cause, alongside television adaptations of franchises such as Tomb Raider and Life is Strange. This ongoing commitment positions the studio as a major force in translating interactive gaming experiences into compelling visual stories.
