Hollywood’s Cinematic Legacy Gets a Grand Restoration

A monumental chapter in Hollywood history is set to be reopened as Sony Pictures Entertainment begins the ambitious restoration of Los Angeles’ iconic Cinerama Dome. This landmark project promises not just physical renovation, but a full revitalization of one of cinema’s most legendary venues.

The vision extends beyond bricks and mortar. In addition to restoring the grand Dome, the project also includes reopening the former 14-screen Hollywood ArcLight Cinemas directly behind it. This dual restoration effort is being managed by the exhibition chain Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, blending cinematic history with modern theatrical technology.

The transformation is slated to begin next month and will span through early 2028. While the exterior and name of the Dome will remain recognizable as the historic Cinerama, the interior will be brought back to life for a new era of moviegoing.

One key detail regarding the restored Dome is that while it will retain its legendary status, it will shift focus from offering a full dine-in experience. Instead, the Dome will serve as a magnificent venue for premium programming, hosting celebrated repertory screenings, exclusive filmmaker series, and major premieres that appeal to movie lovers everywhere.

This commitment to cinematic quality is matched by the upgrades to the adjacent ArcLight Cinemas. The reopened theaters will be rebranded as Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas and will feature cutting-edge technology, including 35mm and 70mm projection capabilities for showing archival films, alongside premium screens utilizing 4K laser projection.

Tom Rothman, CEO of the SPE Motion Picture Group, emphasized the emotional weight of this undertaking. He expressed deep pride in Sony’s investment, stating that the goal is to preserve a place that stands for the soul of moviegoing:

“We believe in moviegoing down to our soul, and no venue on earth stands more for that than the one-of-a-kind Dome. We are investing in Hollywood, literally. The Dome has hosted generations of unforgettable movie moments. Our goal is to preserve its legendary history while ensuring it remains vibrant now and far into the future.”

By restoring these spaces, Sony Pictures Entertainment is doing more than just renovation; they are ensuring that the storied legacy of Hollywood continues to thrive, offering audiences a stunning, technologically advanced environment steeped in cinematic history.
