Sony pulls last 4K player from Japan
The era of dedicated UHD Blu-ray playback in Japan is drawing to a close, as Sony has officially pulled its last remaining UHD Blu-ray player from the market.
The specific device, the UBP-X700/K, which had been available since May 2025, has officially ended its sales in Japan as of October 22nd. This move signals a significant shift in how Sony is approaching home entertainment technology and the future of physical media consumption.
The decision stems from broader strategic changes across the PlayStation ecosystem. With sales of Blu-ray recorders winding down and the announcement that PlayStation game disc production will cease, Sony determined that the PlayStation 5 would serve as its sole remaining UHD Blu-ray player in the country.
This transition reflects a larger pivot away from physical disc-based media and towards console-centric gaming experiences. As PlayStation plans to stop releasing new games on optical discs in early 2028, the focus is clearly shifting to digital content and system-integrated entertainment.
The online listing for the discontinued unit on Sony Japan’s store confirms the end of availability, with the item marked as Out of stock. This item will not be restocked.
While the UBP-X700/K is no longer an option, it’s important to note that the PlayStation 5 remains the only UHD Blu-ray player currently available under the Sony banner in Japan. However, the PS5 does not support the Dolby Vision HDR standard, highlighting a gap in the current technology landscape.
This market exit leaves Panasonic as the only major electronics brand still actively selling UHD Blu-ray players, indicating a narrowing field for this high-definition format.
