Sony sails to Treasure Island

The legendary tale of “Treasure Island” is finding a new life on the silver screen, with Sony Pictures currently in negotiations for the film adaptation directed by Ridley Scott.

Adding a splash of swashbuckling history to the cinematic landscape, the project has already secured a major name: Hugh Jackman has been cast to portray the iconic and cunning pirate, Long John Silver. This casting immediately elevates the prospect of an epic adventure, marrying the classic narrative with modern star power.

While the creative vision is undeniable, securing the rights has proven to be a complex undertaking. Reports indicate that 20th Century Studios, the Disney-owned studio, initially reviewed the package but ultimately passed on the opportunity. The reason cited was the studio’s current focus on its own ambitious line of pirate adventures with the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

Despite the initial hurdles, the creative team behind the project is already assembling a formidable lineup. Ridley Scott will be steering the visual direction, working alongside producer Michael Pruss. The screenplay is slated to be penned by Jack Thorne, an Emmy-winning writer known for his work on Adolescence.

The story itself centers on the classic coming-of-age journey of young Jim Hawkins. Armed with a mysterious map, he embarks on a perilous voyage aboard the Hispaniola, chasing Captain Flint’s long-lost fortune. The narrative unfolds as Jim and his crew navigate treacherous waters, facing mutiny instigated by the charismatic but dangerous Long John Silver.
