Spider-Man Odyssey smash box office records
The box office landscape this weekend delivered a spectacular collision of magic, nostalgia, and high-stakes action, proving once again that audiences have impeccable, if occasionally unpredictable, taste.
While the blockbuster race heats up, some films are enjoying historic runs. The mystical sequel Practical Magic 2, starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, has cemented its dominance, taking the No.1 spot with a staggering $30 million earned over the weekend. This success is particularly sweet, as the film outperformed its original 1998 debut, which, despite its initial struggles, has since evolved into a beloved cult classic.
In the action sphere, the competition is fierce. Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey holds a strong position in third place, grossing $2.06 million on Friday and with estimates climbing toward $8.1 million by Sunday. The film is achieving monumental worldwide success, becoming the highest-grossing film in the history of Universal Pictures with a worldwide total of $1.68 billion.
Meanwhile, the superhero genre continues to command attention. Sony’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which spent six weeks near the top, finally secured its spot at the top. Despite a slight dip on Friday, the film remains incredibly robust, earning $2 million for the day and is projected to hit $8.5 million by Sunday. If these projections hold true, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is poised to become the biggest domestic-grossing film of all time, surpassing even Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Other contenders also made serious waves. The Andrew Garfield-led The Uprising debuted in ninth place, bringing in $1.38 million on Friday. In the comedy category, Alan Ritchson’s Runner is firmly entrenched in second, netting an estimated $2.5 million for the day and $6 million over the three-day period. Even the chaotic family feature Coyote vs. Acme brought home a healthy $6.3 million for the weekend.
