Spider-Man’s new day opens huge
Spider-Man: Brand New Day Shatters Box Office Records with Worldwide Triumph
Sony and Marvel’s latest cinematic offering, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, has delivered an astonishing opening weekend, cementing its place as a global phenomenon. The film drew in an estimated $355 million domestically, setting the stage for what promises to be a monumental run.
The numbers are staggering when viewed against cinematic history. Despite the phenomenal success, the film landed just $2.1 million short of the record-breaking opening weekend set by Avengers: Endgame, which pulled in $357.1 million. Even so, the momentum generated by the new Spider-Man installment is undeniable, demonstrating a massive appetite for superhero storytelling.
This performance eclipses previous benchmarks for the character. The film boasted a significantly larger opening than Spider-Man: No Way Home, which grossed $260.1 million in 2021. Tracking service EntTelligence further highlighted this massive attendance, indicating that 24.1 million moviegoers flocked to see the new adventure.
But the success wasn’t confined to North America. Overseas, the film’s appeal exploded, bringing in a further $572 million, pushing its worldwide opening weekend total to an incredible $927 million. This figure firmly positions it as the second-highest worldwide opening of all time, trailing only Avengers: Endgame at $1.2 billion.
It dramatically outpaced other major releases, surpassing both Avengers: Infinity War ($640 million) and the previous Spider-Man entry, Spider-Man: No Way Home ($601 million).
Behind this financial juggernaut is a powerful message of connection. Sony Motion Pictures Chairman and CEO Tom Rothman reflected on the incredible success, drawing a profound parallel between the film and universal themes of friendship and hope.
“This weekend’s historic worldwide results remind me of what Clarence wrote to George Bailey in It’s a Wonderful life: ‘Remember, no man is a failure who has friends,'” Rothman stated. He added that Spider-Man: Brand New Day is fundamentally about the balm of connection across all ages and the world, celebrating hope in troubled times.
The film also marks a historic moment for its stars, including Zendaya and Jon Bernthal, alongside director Destin Daniel Cretton. Furthermore, the incredible weekend total saw PLFs account for 24% of the overall box office earnings, underscoring the broad cultural reach of the event.
While the film didn’t secure IMAX screens—a distinction reserved for other large-scale epics like The Odyssey—its financial impact is massive. Estimates for director Nolan’s cinematic achievements have also been raised, with projections now touching $1.4 billion.
