Star Trek Doctor Who Crossover Talks

Akiva Goldsman recently confirmed that the dream crossover between the iconic sci-fi franchises Doctor Who and Star Trek was tantalizingly close to becoming reality.

The ambitious collaboration stemmed from discussions between Goldsman and former Doctor Who showrunner Russell T. Davies. They reportedly plotted out a crossover, but ultimately, the higher-ups stepped in, citing the complexities of coordinating two massive broadcasters and their respective legal teams.

“We were like, ‘Okay, let’s do a crossover,’ and we were plotting it out,” Goldsman explained. “There were too many grown-ups that were saying no. But I understand.”

Despite the official roadblocks, Goldsman pursued the vision personally. He made it his mission to weave as many Doctor Who easter eggs as possible into his current project, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

The results have been surprisingly creative. The production now features subtle nods to the classic series, including a TARDIS visible in a visual effects shot and references made by the lead character, Carol Kane, who plays the centuries-old engineer Pelia. Pelia even referenced her time as a companion to a time-travelling Doctor she once knew.

The desire for such a merger was not just a production whim; it reflected a deep yearning among fans. Davies himself had once expressed that the magic truly lies with the audience: “If anyone can make that happen… it’s fans that can make that happen! Two great big broadcasters, two great big empires — and their lawyers! — would have to come together, but we can do that, can’t we? Quite seriously, I’d love it.”

While the idea of a direct crossover is off the table, other possibilities have also faded. The previously considered Star Trek: Year One concept, where Kirk took control of the Enterprise, is now unlikely. Goldsman noted that while there was never an official yes or no, the logistics simply did not pan out: “Nobody’s called, the sets are gone. Everybody else has started to take other jobs. It’s never been officially yes, and it’s never been officially no. But I don’t see it happening.”

Meanwhile, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds continues its journey, having already completed its fifth season, with the next installment expected to arrive next year. The creative energy, though diverted, remains focused on delivering compelling new stories for the fans.
