The galaxy far, far away is about to get a major cinematic upgrade. Disney and Lucasfilm are preparing an ambitious plan to bring two cornerstone Star Wars films to the grandest theatrical format: IMAX 70mm.

This ambitious rollout coincides with the franchise’s momentous 50th anniversary, offering an opportunity to celebrate the legacy in the most immersive way possible. The focus is on a dual experience: a re-release of the newly restored original 1977 Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope and the brand-new adventure, Star Wars: Starfighter.

The celebration kicks off with a major event slated for February 19th, 2027, when the restored original will debut on IMAX screens for the first time. This grand re-release, alongside the new Starfighter entry, will also be available in Digital IMAX and standard cinema settings, ensuring the spectacle reaches every corner of the audience.

The new installment, Star Wars: Starfighter, promises a fresh, high-octane adventure. It will introduce audiences to Kade Auberon, a cynical rogue who is thrown into a dangerous journey across the galaxy, forced to confront his mysterious past and ultimately find his destiny. The film is set to open on May 28th.

The cast and crew for the new epic are already drawing attention. It features a stellar ensemble including Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, Flynn Gray, and Amy Adams. The story is helmed by director Shawn Levy, working from a script penned by Jonathan Tropper.

The appeal of this format is underscored by the recent success of IMAX 70mm screenings, which have recently exploded in popularity. Landmark films like Chris Nolan’s The Odyssey have demonstrated the power of this cinematic experience, with some locations pulling in averages of nearly $1.9 million per screen in a single year.

By embracing the IMAX 70mm format, Disney and Lucasfilm are not just releasing movies; they are creating an event. This approach promises to elevate the beloved saga, offering audiences a deep, visceral, and unforgettable journey into the heart of the Star Wars universe.
