Star Wars Starfighter budget hits $226 Million
The next chapter in the Star Wars saga is brewing, and it’s proving to be a cinematic behemoth. Director Shawn Levy recently wrapped filming for Star Wars: Starfighter in December, setting the stage for a film that will land in theaters in May 2028.
But beneath the sweeping space vistas and epic action lies a complex financial reality. Recent reports delving into the film’s economics reveal that the ambitious project has already amassed $226.5 million in costs through early 2026.
The production effort was spread across stunning international locales, with principal photography conducted primarily at Pinewood Studios in the UK, complemented by scenic location shooting in Sardinia. This global approach hints at the grand scale of the universe being explored.
While the investment is substantial, smart financial strategies are at play. A significant factor helping to manage the budget is a 51.5 million U.K. tax credit, which effectively lowers the net cost so far to approximately $175 million.
Looking ahead, this initial figure is merely the beginning. The film still needs to account for the extensive visual effects, intensive post-production work, and the massive distribution costs leading up to its release. Despite these ongoing expenses, the production is currently outpacing some of its cinematic predecessors.
In terms of scale, the budget for Starfighter is currently rivaling, or even surpassing, the costs of the previous trilogy entries. It positions itself strongly in the production landscape, coming in under the costs associated with films like Rise of Skywalker, while maintaining parity with entries like Last Jedi.
Adding artistic flair to the financial success is the presence of celebrated talent. The project is lensed by Oscar-winning cinematographer Claudio Miranda, known for his evocative work on films like Top Gun: Maverick and Oblivion, promising visual depth that will define the narrative.
The narrative itself delves into an unexplored era of the Star Wars timeline, focusing on events that take place five years after the conclusion of the Skywalker saga. At the helm of this new adventure are a compelling ensemble cast, including Ryan Gosling, who plays the pilot Kade Auberon, alongside a talented group of actors such as Flynn Gray, Matt Smith, Amy Adams, and Eva Mendes.
