The entertainment landscape is a rollercoaster, swinging wildly between blockbuster thrills and quietly struggling adaptations. This past weekend’s box office results offered a fascinating snapshot of what audiences are choosing to watch, from high-stakes video game movies to critically acclaimed documentaries.

On the cinematic front, the big-budget adaptation of a classic fighting game, Street Fighter, delivered a solid, if unspectacular, start. It brought in $31 million domestically, slightly trailing its competitor, Mortal Kombat 2, which grossed $38.5 million. While it landed just ahead of expectations, the ultimate success of this franchise for Paramount will depend on how the international markets respond.

Meanwhile, the world of documentaries saw a staggering success story. A24’s You Can See Everything, led by Nathan Fielder, exploded at the box office, earning $15 million from just 855 screens. This performance is monumental, securing a remarkable $17.5k per-screen average and cementing it as the second-largest documentary opening in history, following Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 9/11.

Not all releases found this level of traction. Some titles struggled significantly. Blumhouse’s Other Mommy saw a disappointing 70% drop in domestic box office, though its international performance remained solid, suggesting potential for future moneymaking.

In contrast, 20th Century Studios’ Whalefall faced rough waters, bringing in only $8 million domestically, though it fared better overseas. This pattern suggests that the studio is currently navigating a tricky period in launching live-action content.

The world of period dramas and adaptations showed some resilience. Focus Features’ Jane Austen film, Sense and Sensibility, proved to be a solid performer, earning $7.25 million. Similarly, another adaptation, Verity, generated $6.21 million domestically, contributing to a substantial worldwide total of $145.3 million.

The action genre continued its ascent, with Resident Evil managing a strong showing, bringing in a $5.5 million weekend gross and $148.5 million domestically. Its international pull was even stronger, pushing the worldwide total to $361 million, keeping the franchise firmly in the spotlight.

However, some recent efforts hit a rough patch. The Indian blockbuster Jailer 2 managed to land in the top 10 with $3.25 million, but DreamWorks’ Forgotten Island faced a disastrous run, netting only $2.25 million and a total of $35.1 million.

Disasters were also seen in other releases. The Social Reckoning barely escaped the bottom ten, falling out of the top 10 to just $1.55 million domestically. Even the Tom Cruise-led Digger struggled, losing audience as theaters began to clear space.

Amidst this turbulence, Netflix made an interesting splash, reporting box office figures for its Oscar contender, La Bola Negra, earning $277k on just four screens. This impressive rate, averaging $69.3k per-screen, marks the second-highest figure ever seen for a non-English-language film on the charts.
