Stunning 4K Restoration of Samba Traore Trailer

A cinematic treasure from Africa is finally getting the spotlight it deserves. Film Movement has just unveiled a brand new trailer showcasing the stunning 4K restoration of the 1992 masterpiece, Samba Traoré, directed by the celebrated filmmaker Idrissa Ouedraogo.

This film, originally hailing from Burkina Faso, carries a history steeped in critical acclaim. It made its mark at the 1993 Berlin Film Festival, where it earned a Silver Bear prize for its “honest depiction of ordinary life,” setting the stage for a compelling narrative that continues to resonate.

The story itself is a vibrant exploration of fate, desire, and moral complexity. Samba returns to his village enriched by new funds, only to embark on an unexpected adventure. He manages to charm the beautiful Saratou into marriage and, with the help of another friend, establishes the very first bar their community has ever witnessed.

But as the merriment unfolds, a serious thread begins to weave through the narrative. Samba’s conscience keeps him tethered to reality, while the shadow of law looms large. The police are actively searching for the elusive “gas station murderer,” adding a layer of thrilling suspense to the romantic backdrop.

The cast brings this tension and charm to life with exceptional performances from Bakary Sangaré, Mariam Kaba, and Abdoulaye Komboudri.

The original 35mm image and sound negative were meticulously digitized, restored in high quality, and given a fresh look through new color grading by Cinegrell. These preserved elements are safeguarded at the Cinematheque Suisse on behalf of Waka Films, ensuring that the original artistic integrity remains intact.

The entire project carries a stamp of prestige, notably with an endorsement from the renowned director Luca Guadagnino, who himself has spoken highly of this work.
