For four decades, cinematographer Robert Richardson has illuminated the screen for some of cinema’s most celebrated auteurs. His career is a tapestry woven with collaborations alongside titans like Oliver Stone, Quentin Tarantino, Martin Scorsese, and John Sayles, earning him three Academy Awards for his exceptional visual artistry.
Recently, this legendary figure found himself the focus of a new spotlight at the prestigious Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. While attending the event, Richardson was presented with a Crystal Globe for Outstanding Artistic Contribution to World Cinema by acting legend Harvey Keitel.
Despite the high praise and recognition, Richardson admitted that all the attention he received left him delightfully non-plussed.
The unexpected wave of creative inspiration didn’t come from the awards ceremony, however; it arrived through a persistent caller named Jana Hojdová. Hojdová, a former cinematography student from Prague’s film school FAMU, reached out to Richardson with an idea for her master’s degree project.
She successfully convinced him to collaborate on the film White Devil, which premiered as part of the festival’s celebrated 60th anniversary line-up. This collaboration proved that even established masters remain open to fresh perspectives and exciting new cinematic journeys, turning a moment of formal recognition into a compelling creative adventure.
