Quentin Tarantino is turning the spotlight toward a classic cinematic character, setting the stage for a new literary adventure. The director is set to release a novel based on his upcoming Once Upon a Time in Hollywood spinoff, centering on the charismatic rogue, Cliff Booth. This novel will land on bookshelves before the feature film even hits the streaming service, offering fans an early glimpse into the world of the legendary anti-hero.
The book, titled The Adventures of Cliff Booth, captures the essence of Booth’s wild life. While the film itself is known as The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth, the novel gives the story a fresh, expanded narrative. It is scheduled for publication on December 8 by HarperCollins.
The novel’s logline promises a vibrant, nostalgic journey: “The Swinging Sixties are long gone — but Clifford Booth keeps on keeping on…War hero, stuntman, bartender, cinema projectionist…with the occasional “clandestine services” for his friends…” It is a colorful snapshot of an era defined by style, mischief, and hidden deals.
This literary project arrives just ahead of the film’s release. The movie, directed by David Fincher and starring Brad Pitt, is scheduled for theatrical release on November 25, followed by its streaming debut on December 23.
The film itself was born from a script that Tarantino eventually scrapped for what was intended to be his tenth and final feature. That scrapped project focused on Cliff Booth, but Tarantino ultimately decided against a straightforward sequel, feeling he had walked the same ground too many times. He expressed a desire for a new kind of story, noting, “I love this script, but I’m still walking down the same ground I’ve already walked. It just kind of unenthused me. This last movie, I’ve got to not know what I’m doing again. I’ve got to be in uncharted territory.”
Despite the pause on a direct sequel, Tarantino remains an active force in storytelling. For now, his creative energy is channeled into other exciting projects, including his stage play, The Popinjay Cavalier, which recently secured the casting of Sacha Baron Cohen.
The cinematic world of Cliff Booth is already packed with stars, including Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Elizabeth Debicki, Carla Gugino, and Brad Pitt.
