Taylor Sheridan says Yellowstone spinoff is dead
The world of television has been captivated by the sprawling saga of Yellowstone, a franchise that has expanded into multiple prequels and spinoffs. Yet, even in a universe built on epic scale, creative decisions don’t always follow the expected path. In a surprising turn, the creator of the empire himself has signaled that one of the most anticipated potential projects is officially off the table.
For years, speculation revolved around the possibility of developing a spin-off centered on the real-life setting of the 6666 Ranch in Texas. Paramount had previously announced plans for this project, hinting at a continuation of the narrative rooted in a tangible location. However, the reality has been less dramatic. There has been little to no movement on the 6666 series.
When pressed about the status of the project, Taylor Sheridan offered a candid perspective on his creative choices. Speaking on the Rodeo Time podcast, Sheridan made it clear that the 6666 series is dead, and crucially, he never planned on pursuing it in the first place. “There’s never going to be one; I would never fictionalize that ranch,” Sheridan explained. “People thought that that was going to be a thing, but I would never do that.”
Sheridan’s reasoning stemmed from a deep respect for the reality behind the fiction. As a part-owner of the actual 6666 Ranch, he expressed concern that fictionalizing the location would trivialize the real people who work there and raise their families there. He emphasized the immense responsibility of protecting the ranch and its dedicated workers, stating he could never do that to the real people. “I’m very protective of the Sixes, and it’s a big responsibility to be the person who has to protect that ranch, so I have to be very, very careful with it,” he noted.
Despite the fate of 6666, the overall Yellowstone franchise continues its remarkable expansion. The series has successfully branched out into several successful ventures, including the prequel series 1883 and 1923, alongside spinoffs like Y: Marshals, which introduced Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton, and Dutton Ranch, featuring Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser as Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler.
Even ambitious ideas, like the potential standalone series The Madison, have evolved. While initially envisioned as a direct Yellowstone spin-off, Paramount+ ultimately opted to develop it as a separate, standalone series, demonstrating a willingness to explore new narrative territories outside the established framework.
It is a testament to the enduring power of the core narrative that even when a specific road ends, the landscape it creates continues to grow, proving that the foundation of a great story can support a multitude of exciting futures.
