Ted reunites for a premiere date

The world of animation is about to get a whole lot furrier, and certainly a lot more foul-mouthed. Peacock has announced the upcoming animated series, Ted: The Animated Series, promising to bring the beloved, foul-mouthed teddy bear and his surrogate family to the animated screen.

This new venture marks a significant expansion for the franchise, taking the story of John and Ted 12 years into the future. The animated mayhem will premiere with its first eight episodes on December 17, with plans for additional episodes rolling out in 2027.

The series picks up where the live-action films left off, focusing on the grown-up adventures of John (Mark Wahlberg) and Ted (voiced by Seth MacFarlane) as they navigate the complexities of adult life, marriage, parenting, and the inevitable challenges of aging.

The central premise is clear: John and his thunder-buddy Ted, both with their own families and decidedly dead-end jobs, follow each other through a series of chaotic, yet heartwarming, bad ideas. It’s a hilarious look at how lovable stoners enable each other’s most questionable decisions.

The animated cast is stacked with familiar and exciting new faces. MacFarlane continues to bring the voice to Ted, while Mark Wahlberg, Amanda Seyfried, and Jessica Barth reprise their roles as John, Sam, and Tami-Lynn. The supporting cast is expanded with newcomers, including Kyle Mooney, who voices the new character Apollo, and Liz Richman, who brings the wit of Ruth to the group.

The success of the source material is undeniable, which is no surprise that Peacock is investing in the spin-off. The original live-action Ted film was a cinematic juggernaut, grossing over $549 million globally and setting records as one of the highest-grossing R-rated comedies of all time. The sequel, Ted 2, followed with massive success, contributing to a combined worldwide total of over $760 million.

This incredible box office legacy speaks to the enduring appeal of MacFarlane’s crude, comedic style. Now, the focus shifts to animation, promising to translate the chaos and charm of the Thunder Buddies into a fresh, visually engaging format that will delight audiences of all ages.

The production team is anchored by creative forces familiar with comedy. Seth MacFarlane is producing the series, working alongside executive producers Paul Corrigan and Brad Walsh, who bring their experience from Modern Family to guide the narrative.
