The Beyond remake is coming

Back to The Beyond: A New Gateway to Horror

The legacy of Italian horror master Lucio Fulci is poised for a thrilling revival. Hangtime International Pictures and Severin Films have officially teamed up to remake the iconic classic, The Beyond. This collaboration signals a major move to secure remake rights for genre films across theatrical releases, streaming platforms, and physical media, aiming to bring Fulci’s chilling vision to a new generation of horror fans.

For the partners involved, the opportunity extends beyond a simple remake; it is a chance to reimagine a cinematic classic as a masterclass in experiential horror. Frank Murray, co-CEO of Hangtime, emphasized that the partnership was fueled by a shared commitment to horror aficionados and a desire to deliver new horror experiences. He noted that this was a rare chance for an established director to revitalize Fulci’s work and amplify its growing cultural significance.

The scope of the ambition is further deepened by the interconnected world Fulci created. The teams are particularly excited about the built-in sequel potential afforded by Fulci’s sprawling Gates of Hell universe, suggesting that this remake could be the starting point for a larger cinematic exploration.

Frida Torresblanco, co-CEO of Hangtime, highlighted the synergy with Severin Films, describing them as an ideal creative sounding board. She believes that Severin’s two decades of experience restoring and releasing genre films with respect for their originality makes them a uniquely knowledgeable partner in navigating the rights process.

David Gregory, co-founder, president, and CEO of Severin Films, echoed this sentiment, expressing enthusiasm for the prospect. He stressed that Severin Films has dedicated two decades to honoring the legacy of genre cinema, and reimagining these classic titles offers a unique opportunity for the genre community to engage with the past while forging a new future.

The original The Beyond itself remains a cornerstone of Fulci’s cinematic universe. It is the second chapter in his celebrated “Gates of Hell” trilogy, which includes the preceding films City of the Living Dead and The House by the Cemetery.

A previous version of the film, The Beyond, had already been released to audiences as The Composer’s Cut, featuring a notable new score composed by Fabio Frizzi, who also provided the film’s original musical theme. That iteration starred actors including Catriona MacColl, David Warbeck, Sarah Keller, Antoine Saint-John, and Veronica Lazar, exploring the terrifying scenario of a young woman inheriting an old hotel that serves as a gateway to Hell.
