The Holy Boy trailer reveals a sinister miracle and terrifying consequences

Italy has recently brought home recognition for its genre cinema, securing the nomination for Best International Feature Film at the 99th Academy Awards for Paolo Strippoli’s The Spiral. But Strippoli is clearly a master of the unsettling, and his latest offering, The Holy Boy, is set to deliver an equally profound and disturbing psychological journey.

This upcoming feature, which has already garnered attention, is heading to Shudder next month, on November 27. Before the release, Shudder has unveiled a new trailer that hints at the sinister dynamics waiting beneath the surface of this story.

At its core, The Holy Boy is a deeply evocative exploration of pain and connection. The narrative centers on Sergio (Michele Riondino), a teacher who is forced to relocate to Remis, a secluded Italian village famed for its perceived happiness. However, Sergio soon uncovers a secret far darker than any idyllic facade: the villagers engage in a bizarre, ritualistic practice. Each week, they gather to embrace Matteo (Giulio Feltri), an introverted fifteen-year-old, believing that this connection acts as a spiritual shortcut, alleviating all pain and sorrow.

The unsettling discovery quickly spirals into conflict. As Sergio attempts to rescue Matteo, he realizes that the village’s devotion to their young boy is not benevolent, but a carefully guarded secret. His attempt to liberate the boy known as the Angel of Remis ignites a vengeful reaction within the community, turning a ritualistic act of affection into a source of terrifying communal wrath.

Paolo Strippoli, who co-wrote the script with Jacopo Del Giudice and Milo Tissone, masterfully directs this journey, proving himself adept at crafting classic horror stories with a modern, philosophical twist. This is the third feature film from Strippoli, following Flowing (2022) and A Classic Horror Story (2021).

Strippoli speaks to the power of his vision, noting that the film is about the complex relationship humans have with suffering. The Holy Boy delves into the shortcuts we take to avoid pain, and examines how pain itself is what makes us truly human. He envisioned a fictional town and an extraordinary ritual—an uncanny embrace that erases suffering—and now, audiences are about to witness the terrifying consequences of that miracle.

The film features a compelling ensemble cast, including Michele Riondino, Giulio Feltri, Paolo Pierobon, and Romana Maggiora Vergano, bringing gravity and emotional depth to the disturbing premise. Prepare to watch The Holy Boy and discover the terrifying truths hidden within the embrace.
