The Odyssey dominates Monday box office
The Odyssey Sets a New Standard for Movie Mondays
Christopher Nolan’s epic “The Odyssey” didn’t just bring cinematic history to the box office this week; it delivered a staggering performance, claiming the title of the best Monday result of the year so far. The film pulled in $18.67 million on Monday, setting an impressive benchmark for the opening week.
This phenomenal performance places “The Odyssey” firmly among the heavy hitters dominating the weekend screens. It finished ahead of other major releases, demonstrating strong audience appeal right out of the gate. For context, it outperformed “Toy Story 5,” which earned $17.3 million on its first Monday, and came in significantly ahead of Nolan’s previous blockbuster, “Oppenheimer,” which had generated $12.67 million on its opening Monday.
While the performance was stellar, the numbers also highlight the competitive landscape. For Universal, this achievement remains one of five highest Monday results, sitting just behind massive hits like “Jurassic World” ($25.3 million), “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” ($20.1 million), “Sing” ($19.7 million), and “Fast & Furious 6” ($19.7 million).
The success of “The Odyssey” followed a massive opening weekend, contributing to $124.5 million domestically and a total global opening weekend of $264 million for the film. This indicates that the momentum generated by the movie carried strongly into the crucial Monday viewing period.
Beyond the traditional box office metrics, the film’s impact extended into specialized viewing experiences. The British Film Institute’s IMAX theatre managed to achieve its best-ever opening weekend, pulling in an incredible £219,867 over the three days. This performance edged out “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” at £216,454, showcasing the broad appeal of cinematic spectacle.
As the weekend draws to a close, anticipation remains high. With no major studio-wide entries scheduled for the upcoming weekend, “The Odyssey” is poised to maintain its dominance. However, viewers should brace themselves for a slight shift in attention when Sony’s highly anticipated release, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” hits cinemas next Friday.
