The unmade Monsters Inc 2 script revealed

The history of Pixar’s biggest hit, Monsters, Inc., isn’t just about roaring monsters and scare tactics; it’s also a story filled with ambitious scripts that almost became reality. Behind the beloved animation, there exists an alternate timeline—a potential sequel that was written, approved, and ultimately shelved, leaving fans wondering what might have been if the story had continued.

Screenwriters Bob Hilgenberg and Rob Muir recently opened up about this unmade possibility, detailing a script they penned for a follow-up film titled “Monsters, Inc. 2: Lost in Scaradise.” It wasn’t just any script; it explored an entirely different trajectory for the characters, imagining a world where Mike Wazowski was on the brink of walking down the altar, Sulley had ascended to executive leadership at Monsters Incorporated, and Boo had grown significantly older.

The writers shared that they were deeply passionate about this alternate vision, insisting that if anyone read the script, they wouldn’t know if it was influenced by Pixar or not. They felt their goal was simple: to create a narrative that honored the brand while pushing creative boundaries.

However, this ambitious sequel never moved forward. The shift from creative pursuit to commercial reality seems to have been dictated by much larger corporate forces brewing in the background. It turned out the eventual decision to halt production was tied to growing tension between then-Disney CEO Michael Eisner and Pixar chief Steve Jobs regarding the terms of their partnership.

This creative pause coincided with a major shift in leadership. The dynamics were ultimately resolved in 2006 when Bob Iger took over as Disney’s CEO, leading to Pixar’s full acquisition. While that corporate change brought stability, it closed the door on Hilgenberg and Muir’s specific vision for the sequel timeline.

Despite the unrealized potential of that specific story, the spirit of the Monsters franchise remains vibrant. The creative engine continues to run, evidenced by the fact that work is currently underway on a third film in the series, ensuring that the world of Monsters still has plenty of room for new adventures.
