In a recent interview, Wingard offered a hopeful update, suggesting that the project is simply waiting for the right moment to re-engage. “My career’s kind of bouncing around, so different things have taken precedence,” he admitted. “But ThunderCats is still kicking around. I think it’s just a matter of finding time to really re-concentrate and re-engage with it.”
While the timeline for the film remains open, the creative foundation for the adaptation was laid back in 2021 when Warner Bros. and Wingard initially announced plans for the “big-scale feature.” Screenwriter Simon Barrett, who also collaborated with Wingard on other major projects, joined the director to craft the screenplay, setting the stage for what promises to be a visual spectacle.
Wingard shared the deep personal connection to the source material, noting that his real obsession with ThunderCats began during his high school years, where he wrote a 272-page screenplay about the cartoon. This history fuels his desire to approach the live-action as a true fantasy experience.
His vision for the film is ambitious: he wants to create a cinematic experience that is a “new type of fantasy sci-fi spectacle film that people have never seen before.” Instead of simply replicating the original animation, Wingard aims for a unique aesthetic. He wants a film that transports audiences back to the ’80s visual style, creating a hybrid CGI spectacle that bridges the gap between cartoon and realism.
