Tom Cruise movie is officially getting the IMAX visual upgrade

The cinematic landscape is shifting, and the big screen is preparing for a spectacular return. The IMAX Corporation has officially confirmed that Christopher Nolan‘s much-anticipated blockbuster, The Odyssey, is set to land in premium large-format venues as early as this week. This highly anticipated return follows a recent cinematic pivot, signaling a willingness to revisit epic scale in the large format.

This move comes in the wake of the box-office performance of Digger, a film that, despite its colossal scope and production value, experienced significant financial headwinds. The contrast between the ambition of the project and its commercial reality has drawn attention from industry observers.

The production itself is a heavyweight affair, starring Tom Cruise and helmed by the celebrated director Alejandro G. Iñárritu. It is an epic sci-fi political satire, a project that demanded an enormous investment. Reports indicate the film’s budget floated between $140 million and $180 million.

The financial journey for Digger has been particularly telling. Despite the massive budget, the movie debuted with less than $20 million worldwide. Furthermore, the marketing effort by Warner Bros. added an additional $100 million to the costs. This stark reality sets the stage for the massive financial targets the film must achieve moving forward.

To reach profitability, the film needs substantial global performance. Based on typical revenue splits between studios and exhibitors, the break-even point for the production is estimated to be around $350 million worldwide.

If current trends hold, the financial outlook for Digger suggests a lifetime gross around $50 million. Now, with The Odyssey slated for a premium return, the industry is watching closely to see if the appetite for monumental cinematic experiences can translate into the kind of box-office success required to justify these ambitious budgets.
