V/H/S/MIXTAPE trailer: GWAR and Henson’s horror mashup
Get ready to crank the volume, because the found-footage horror franchise is gearing up for a sonic explosion. The highly anticipated new installment, V/H/S/MIXTAPE, is arriving next week, promising to crank the genre up to eleven by making music and sound the primary source of terror.
This isn’t just another jump scare fest; V/H/S/MIXTAPE is an eclectic, high-octane anthology blending cosmic horror, psychological suspense, and outrageous splatter into one unforgettable mixtape of nightmares. It taps into the primal fear of audio chaos, exploring how rhythm, sound, and melody can haunt, possess, and destroy.
The creative lineup for this venture is a powerhouse, bringing together a fascinating array of talent. The film features legendary director Ernest Dickerson, hip hop icon RZA, Mads director David Moreau, and acclaimed filmmaker Renee Zhan. Adding to the visual and thematic depth are contributions from GWAR, original creature work from Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, and music video segments directed by Flying Lotus and Tobias Forge.
The anthology is packed with distinct segments, each diving into a unique brand of dread. Viewers will jump between stories like DANCE, DANCE, DANCE, DANCE, directed by Renee Zhan, which explores a studio attempting to reboot a puppet show with a mysterious past and utilizes work from Jim Henson’s Creature Shop; HEARTBEAT, where two YouTube urbex influencers find themselves trapped in a decommissioned military facility used for sonic experimentations; and THE MUSIC OF MR. SZE, which follows a college film student uncovering the reclusive life of a tormented musician.
Another gripping segment, DEATH TONE, directed by RZA, follows a young sound engineer as she follows her late father’s instructions to create the ultimate track, demonstrating the power of audio in a visceral way.
The story isn’t over with the scares. The film will also include a spectacular wrap segment where GWAR hosts skits and music videos in an MTV-style show from hell, alongside additional music videos directed by Tobias Forge and Flying Lotus.
V/H/S/MIXTAPE continues the established tradition of the franchise, which launched in 2012 and has enjoyed a strong resurgence on Shudder with annual installments like V/H/S/94, V/H/S/99, V/H/S/85>, V/H/S/Beyond>, and V/H/S/Halloween>. It is poised to maintain this annual tradition before the franchise moves on to its next major step with V/H/S: SCP, which is targeting a theatrical release in 2027.
Produced by Josh Goldbloom, Steven Schneider, Roy Lee, Michael Schreiber, and Brad Miska, and executive produced by Ben Ross and Rami Yasin, V/H/S/MIXTAPE is set to deliver a truly unique and rhythmically terrifying experience. Mark your calendars for October 9 on Shudder to witness this symphony of scares.
