Verhoeven in Robocop
The heavy hitters of cinematic history are teaming up for a futuristic reboot, bringing a dose of gritty satire and high-octane action to the beloved world of RoboCop. Filmmaker James Wan has confirmed that he will be directing several episodes of the upcoming Amazon Prime Video series, which will feature the legendary Paul Verhoeven.
The announcement came during a recent panel at BlumFest at New York Comic Con, signaling a high-profile collaboration that fans have been eagerly awaiting. While Wan kept details about the extent of Verhoeven’s involvement private, the association immediately amplified the project’s appeal, injecting it with a layer of dark, satirical history.
Verhoeven is the original architect of the iconic 1987 film, a landmark sci-fi action movie known for its razor-sharp commentary on American capitalism, extreme violence, and deeply memorable lines. Though he opted out of directing the sequel, his involvement now serves as a powerful endorsement for the new direction.
The new series reimagines the core concept, shifting the focus to a more complex social dynamic. The narrative introduces a scenario where a massive tech conglomerate partners with local law enforcement to deploy a cutting-edge enforcer designed to combat escalating crime—a figure who exists somewhere between man and machine.
The central figure of this new iteration is rumored to be a former soldier who succumbed to combat and was subsequently transformed into a cyborg, beginning a completely new existence. Dan Stevens, known for his recent work in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, is set to take on the challenging role of this transformed character.
The series is slated for an eight-episode run and boasts an impressive creative team, including showrunner Peter Ocko of Lodge 49, alongside executive producers Wan, Michael Clear, and Rob Hackett. The fusion of Wan’s directorial flair, Verhoeven’s satirical depth, and Stevens’ casting promises a compelling and visceral take on the dystopian future of RoboCop.
