Hollywood dealmakers have struck a major victory for a troubled project, securing the distribution rights for the upcoming reboot of the iconic thriller, Cliffhanger, in the United States. The acquisition belongs to Vertical, which has stepped in to guide the film forward from a period of uncertainty.

This move comes at a pivotal time, as the original distributor of the property faced serious financial difficulties, leaving several high-profile films in limbo. Among those in jeopardy was the much-anticipated Cliffhanger.

The saga of Cliffhanger has been marked by shifting creative landscapes. Initially, the project was slated to feature Sylvester Stallone, but reports indicated that creative differences with director Ric Roman Waugh led to his and Waugh exiting weeks before production was set to begin.

To revitalize the story, the project underwent a significant overhaul. It was reimagined with a fresh cast, featuring the dynamic pairing of Lily James and Pierce Brosnan to lead the narrative.

The new story finds the central trio—Naomi (James), her sister Sydney, and her father—immersed in a luxurious escape. They embark on a weekend excursion with the son of a billionaire, staying with her father, an experienced mountaineer who runs a stunning chalet in the Dolomites.

Their idyllic retreat takes a dramatic turn when the group is suddenly ambushed by a gang of kidnappers. Forced into hiding, Naomi must summon her courage to fight for the safety of her family and narrowly escape a perilous situation.

Industry buzz suggests the revised vision has resonated strongly, with reports indicating that the film has tested very well and is poised to receive a serious theatrical push. With the distribution secured, Vertical is now planning a theatrical release scheduled for Spring 2027.
