Vinessa Shaw covers “Come Little Children” for new Halloween EP

As the air turns crisp and the shadows grow long, indie folk-pop duo Freedom Fry is bringing a dose of spooky, acoustic magic to the Halloween season. They have teamed up with actress Vinessa Shaw to craft a haunting reimagining of the iconic track “Come Little Children”, pulling the classic from the world of Hocus Pocus into a fresh, eerie light.

The collaboration is steeped in the spirit of cinematic chills. Freedom Fry, known for their mellow sound, sought inspiration in the atmosphere of classic horror and comedy films like Scream and Halloween. They aimed to capture the mood of the holiday, preferring acoustic, whispery textures that lean heavily into the spookiness rather than typical pop arrangements.

The result is an EP titled Haunts, a collection of five acoustic Halloween reimaginings that is now available for listeners to explore. The centerpiece is the slowed-down cover of “Come Little Children,” a melody originally penned by James Horner and famously sung by Sarah Sanderson (played by Sarah Jessica Parker).

The duo and Shaw didn’t stop at the studio; they turned the creative vision into a tangible experience. They released a limited edition 7-inch vinyl featuring the reimagined track on Side A, accompanied by an exclusive a cappella version on Side B. This vinyl comes in three different editions, including signed versions, and offers fans a physical keepsake of the holiday mood.

The creative process was a delightful melding of talents. Vinessa Shaw, who has a fantastic voice, brought fresh ideas to the table. She loved the eerie quality of the track and suggested adding harmonies, even considering a spoken-word element to heighten the sense of dread. She shared her excitement about collaborating and revisiting a song that shaped countless childhood memories.

Freedom Fry echoed this enthusiasm, noting how much they enjoyed leaning into the darker side of the music. They hope their versions become the perfect soundtrack for anyone seeking a Halloween vibe that is both different and wonderfully fresh.

This unique blend of indie folk sensibilities and cinematic spookiness proves that sometimes, the most enchanting melodies are found in the shadows, ready to haunt the playlists of everyone.
