He admitted that the initial version he created was, in his view, “too scary,” and he received feedback from Fox demanding a PG-13 rating. However, Carter felt this tempering of the vision missed the mark entirely. He argued that this new cut wasn’t just a simple re-edit; it was an opportunity to bring to life the scariest movie he had intended from the start—a vision that existed on the page but never made it fully onto the screen.

This pushback ultimately led to an expanded version being included with the film’s physical media release, adding approximately three minutes of new and alternate footage. This extended vision delves deeper into the narrative, following Mulder and Scully as they are called back into action by the FBI when a former priest claims he is receiving psychic visions concerning a kidnapped agent.

The final result is a film that honors the director’s intent, delivering a more visceral experience for those willing to embrace the full scope of its horror. This updated version will be available on Hulu and Disney+ starting August 14.
