Waititi’s Star Wars film put on ice
Six years ago, the name Taika Waititi was tethered to the epic world of Star Wars. What started as a tantalizing possibility for a cinematic adventure has, over time, evolved into a fascinating case study of creative ambition, shifting expectations, and the unpredictable nature of blockbuster filmmaking.
The initial blueprint for the project involved a collaboration with writers like Krysty Wilson-Cairns and Tony McNamara. The concept, when it materialized, was praised for being both hilarious and great, with Waititi aiming to harness the inherent fun from the original mythology.
However, as the years passed, the path to realizing that grand vision proved elusive. When high-profile shifts occurred in the entertainment landscape, including changes within Lucasfilm, the momentum stalled. The film remained largely in development limbo, a creative idea existing just beyond the reach of production.
In recent years, while Waititi has continued to explore his diverse talents, the Star Wars concept has been temporarily placed into cold storage. The director has confirmed that the project is currently on ice, signaling a deliberate pivot toward other creative endeavors.
“I hate to break this to you, but we are going to actually put it on ice, and we’re working on a different thing together,” Waititi explained. This decision allows the filmmaker to focus his energy on other narratives.
While the exact nature of this new collaboration remains undisclosed, Waititi suggests that the path forward is currently opaque. He noted that while the door is not entirely shut, the possibility remains open: “Ice ages do come to an end. Who knows?”
This creative redirection is mirrored by Waititi’s robust and diverse slate of upcoming projects. He is currently developing several other exciting films, including a potential adaptation of the satirical novel Barn 8, a take on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and original works such as We’re Wolves and an adaptation of the comic The Incal.
Waititi’s journey as a director has seen a mix of critical reception over the years, with some of his previous features receiving mixed reviews. Despite this, his commitment to exploring unique and often whimsical stories remains undiminished. With a new film, Klara and the Sun, opening soon, set to debut in theaters on October 23rd, the focus is firmly on the next chapter of Waititi’s prolific and imaginative career.
