The neon glow of 1985 Miami is about to get a seriously stylish reboot, as major talent converges for Joseph Kosinski‘s new take on the iconic crime drama, Miami Vice ’85.

Set against the backdrop of mid-eighties excess and deep-seated corruption, the film promises to deliver a visually stunning exploration of the glamour and decay of Miami, following two detectives who dive deep into the city’s shadows.

At the heart of this project is the pedigree of the story, penned by Dan Gilroy. The script is reportedly inspired by the landmark television series that Michael Mann produced, a series that left an indelible mark on both television and the cultural landscape.

The cast is stacked with recognizable names and fresh faces. Michael B. Jordan is slated to play Ricardo Tubbs, while Austin Butler brings the intensity of James ‘Sonny’ Crockett to the role. Adding grit and menace to the narrative is Walton Goggins, who has reportedly landed a secondary villain role, stepping into the shoes of one of the henchmen to John Leguizamo’s powerful cartel king.

Goggins’ inclusion signals an exciting blend of classic cinematic cool and contemporary performance, promising a complex villain dynamic amidst the high-octane action.

The vision steering this ambitious project comes from director Joseph Kosinski, who will handle the direction, aiming to capture the raw energy of the era. Production is set to kick off in November, with filming planned across the dynamic landscapes of New York and Miami.

To truly capture the expansive scope of this cinematic vision, the production will shoot in IMAX format, ensuring every frame delivers the high-definition spectacle the story demands.

Fans will get their dose of retro cool with a modern cinematic edge. With an anticipated release date of May 19th 2028, Miami Vice ’85 is poised to redefine a classic era with a thrilling and stylish new chapter.
