The intersection of history, spirituality, and artificial intelligence is proving to be a potent formula for cinematic storytelling. FirstLine Films recently unveiled a seven-minute exclusive clip from the upcoming film As Deep as the Grave, offering a glimpse into how modern technology can breathe new life into classic narratives.
The centerpiece of this early footage features a digitally recreated likeness of Val Kilmer, who steps into the role of Father Fintan in 1904. The clip allows viewers to witness the younger Kilmer grappling with profound moral questions, navigating the tension between establishing a new church and honoring the spiritual history of the Navajo people.
Beyond the personal struggle of Father Fintan, the footage beautifully captures his burgeoning relationships. We see him forging bonds with Seechi and introducing a significant Navajo elder, played by Jonathan Nez, who becomes a crucial guide as the priest explores the rugged landscape and its deep history.
This intimate cinematic moment serves as a compelling prelude to the film’s broader, fascinating true story. As Deep as the Grave is rooted in the actual exploration undertaken by Ann Axtell Morris and her husband, archaeologist Earl H. Morris, who worked alongside the Navajo in Arizona during the 1920s.
Together, Morris and Kilmer sought evidence of the Ancestral Puebloans, or Anasazi, while exploring the historic region of Canyon de Chelly. The creation of this visual experience involved a creative collaboration that leaned heavily on innovation. Director Coerte Voorhees utilized AI technology to complete Kilmer’s scenes, a process supported by the cooperation of Kilmer’s family estate and his children. This innovative approach helped realize the vision of the production, which Voorhees penned and produced alongside John Voorhees.
The feature film itself brings together a talented ensemble cast, starring Abigail Lawrie and Tom Felton as Ann and Earl Morris, alongside notable performers such as Hanako Footman, Ewen Bremner, Wes Studi, Finn Jones, Jacob Fortune-Lloyd, and Abigail Breslin.
