Gothic dread and ancient folklore are about to collide in a cinematic spectacle that promises to be both haunting and deeply visceral. Robert Eggers is bringing his signature, meticulously crafted vision to the screen with Werwulf, an upcoming period folk-horror film that features a breathtaking cast, including Lily-Rose Depp, the daughter of Johnny Depp.

The tension is amplified by the film’s central premise: it follows a mute 14th-century peasant cursed to transform into a werewolf during every full moon. This harrowing tale delves into themes of devotion, damnation, and the devil within, positioning it as a truly unique entry in the horror genre.

Adding to the mystique of the project is the fascinating synchronicity of the film’s release schedule. The second trailer was released on September 26, 2026, perfectly timed to coincide with the full moon. This deliberate connection isn’t accidental; director Eggers revealed that his choice was rooted in deeper lore. He sought inspiration from very old English texts and Icelandic literature, which suggest that werewolves are affected by the cycle of the moon, providing a historical and mystical foundation for the curse.

This thematic approach connects the film to cinematic history, echoing the mythological roots often explored in classic works like Nosferatu, a project where Eggers previously collaborated with Depp and Willem Dafoe.

The cast is stacked with formidable talent. Alongside Depp and Dafoe, the film features Ralph Ineson, Ned Dennehy, Kate Dickie, and a stellar ensemble of supporting actors, including Valeriia Karaman, Tony McCarthy, Hannah Harpin, Jan Bijvoet, and Preslav Shipkaliev, all contributing to the atmosphere of dread.

Produced by Robert Eggers p.g.a., Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, and Garrett Bird p.g.a., and Sjón, Werwulf is slated for a theatrical release on December 25, 2026.
