For those who enjoy a healthy dose of terror, be warned: the latest trailer for Whalefall is not for the faint of heart. If you have any soft spots for claustrophobia or an intense fear of the deep ocean, prepare to be sent spiraling, as some of the scenes in this new survival thriller are arguably more terrifying than any horror film released in decades.

The movie, based on the acclaimed novel by Daniel Kraus, is an intense dive into the limits of human endurance. It promises a high-stakes, emotional journey centered around survival, fatherhood, and the cruel physics of the deep.

At the core of the story is Jay Gardiner, played by Austin Abrams. Following the tragic death of his father, Jay embarks on a desperate dive off the Central Coast of California searching for his remains. What he discovers is far more terrifying than he ever imagined: he is swallowed by a massive sperm whale.

Trapped within the whale’s belly, Jay faces an impossible challenge—he has only one hour of oxygen remaining. It is in this terrifying predicament that he must harness the hard-earned lessons of his father to find a way to escape the crushing darkness.

The production team, led by director Brian Duffield, brought this colossal concept to life by creating an astonishing set. To capture the harrowing experience of survival, the cast and crew spent an entire summer inside a whale within a soundstage in Studio City, California. This unique process ensured that the performances and the emotional weight of the story felt intensely real.

Rounding out the ensemble is a stellar cast, including Josh Brolin, who plays his father, alongside Elisabeth Shue, John Ortiz, Jane Levy, and Emily Rudd, who bring depth and intensity to the harrowing narrative. The combined talent promises a truly gripping cinematic experience.

Adding to the buzz ahead of its release, 20th Century Studios has dropped a stunning poster for Whalefall. The striking image depicts Abrams’ character swimming toward the surface of the ocean as a giant sperm whale swims toward him from below, perfectly capturing the foreboding atmosphere of the film.

With the trailer and promotional materials already circulating, Whalefall is quickly becoming one of the most anticipated movies of the year. Set to open exclusively in theaters on October 16, the film offers a high-concept, deep-sea survival story that is guaranteed to keep audiences on the edge of their seats.
